Education

British Sign Language (BSL) is a visual language which makes use of the three dimensional spaces and movement of hands, facial expressions and body language to convey the meaning of language.

It has its own syntax and grammar and was first recognised as an official language by use of the Deaf community in 2003.

The courses I teach are designed to lead you through the learning process:

  • Deaf Awareness
  • Tailor Made Courses
  • BSL Level 1
  • BSL Level 2

The courses are designed to give participants encouragement and the skills required to communicate with Deaf people on a basic level.

Each of the BSL Level 1 and BSL Level 2 courses are accredited by Signature who is the national awarding body for BSL qualifications in England. All participants receive a certificate on passing each course.

The courses are divided up in to 3 units; each unit must be achieved to attain the full qualification.

It is important to understand that by achieving BSL Level 1 & BSL Level 2 this does not automatically award you a qualification as a Sign Language Interpreter, participants are discouraged from using their skills in seeking interpreting work, however by achieving the qualifications it can help you become more Deaf aware, develop your communication and language skills with Deaf people, and can even lead to a career as a communication professional.

BSL Level 1 and BSL Level 2 are designed as stepping stones to towards attaining future qualifications in NVQ BSL Level 3 then NVQ BSL Level 6 in Language Units, which would allow participants to apply for Interpreter Training Programmes in the future.

Deaf Awareness/Communication Tactics

This is a general introduction and leads you through the first footsteps of learning to sign. It provides individuals with information and strategies to understand about the Deaf Community, Deaf Culture and the knowledge required to communicate more effectively with those who are Deaf, Deafened or Hard of Hearing.

There are approximately 10 million people with some degree of hearing loss in the UK. Being Deaf Aware, organisations will gain potentially 1:7 new customers, that equates to 10 million consumers and service users that may otherwise be overlooked.

By providing staff with Deaf Awareness Training organisations immediately reduce the barriers arising from the communication difficulties between hearing and Deaf people. Lack of awareness throughout many organisations, however innocent, may have a detrimental effect on a Deaf person, leaving them with a feeling of isolation and adding to the oppression they continually face. Deaf People have an equal right to participate fully in society.

Deaf Awareness training course will improve your communication skills and confidence to help you break down the barriers faced by people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

What can you do?

  • Enable staff to communicate with Deaf customers
  • Comply with the Equalities Act
  • Learn communication tools
  • Understand the limitations of lip reading
  • Identify and implement solutions to situations where people who deaf or hard of hearing loss may face accessibility or communication barriers.
  • Recognise and respond to the different ways people who are deaf or hard of hearing may communicate.
  • Understand and demonstrate how you can engage and communicate with people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
